As Biden cancels more student debt, Republican governors literally steamroll public institutions

As President Biden announced an additional $7.7 billion in student loan forgiveness, Republican governors across the country fume over poor voters breaking free from crippling debt.

This morning in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott personally locked the door to the financial aid office at Texas A&M University. “We cannot allow the underprivileged to be educated using tax dollars without the privilege of paying full price,” Abbott said. Some Texas Republicans have spoken out against voucher programs that use public funds for private schools. They were heard screaming on the other side of the locked door.

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis is not only dismantling public education through legislation, but he insists on destroying the buildings and property that students have loved for generations. “It brings me no joy to see students being hopeful about the future,” DeSantis beamed. “That is why I am taking this antique steamroller and demolishing landmarks that inspire them. That brings me joy.”
